In the western world the holiday season may have come to an end, but Vancouver’s rich diversity of cultures brings us celebrations from far and wide.

Every year Vancouver celebrates the Chinese New Year with a variety of exciting activities in and around Chinatown. Ring the the Year Of The Rabbit at the Chinese New Year Parade, the celebrations’ most popular event drawing more than 50,000 spectators annually. With more than 50 lions, diverse multicultural dance troupes, the Vancouver Police Department Motorcycle Drill Team, marching bands and more, it is a spectacle not to be missed.

After the parade, festivities in Chinatown continue with a cultural fair at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden Courtyard. Based on the temple fairs of old, this year’s celebration will consist of a “hot & noisy” (re-nao) mixture of traditional activities perfect for the whole family. You can expect firecrackers, red couplet making, childrens’ lion parades, red envelopes handed out by “gramma and grandpa” and a whole host of other intriguing activities aimed to delight AND teach you about the traditions of this thousands year old holiday.
